ISSUE #13: Embracing the not-so sweet side of self-care
Because self-care is more than just spa days and naps
Hey friend!
"Self-care" has probably been the most popular used term over the past 3 years. With more time during the pandemic, many of us decided to trade in the hustle for more softness, time to ourselves and better skincare routines.
While I fully believe that implementing a consistent journaling routine and carving out time in your day for rest is absolutely needed, I've learned that self-care isn't just about committing to what makes you feel good.
Self -care isn't always comfortable.
As someone who spent the majority of 2022 trying to figure out what she was going to do with her life, I realized that we don't talk enough about the parts of self-care that honestly suck.
Like the hard conversations that you have in therapy. Yes, the act of going to therapy is self-care but the feelings it brings up can often leave you feeling depleted.
Or what about the guilt that comes along with choosing to rest an extra 20 minutes after a long day before playing with your toddler? Yes, choosing to rest is self-care but it's also at the expense of not spending more time with those you love.
The problem with not speaking up about the non-glamorous side of self-care, is that it can cause us run away from those moments that are uncomfortable but also very needed.
And I don't want you missing out on really taking care of yourself because the outcome doesn't look like how self-care is often marketed. Let today be the day that you begin to embrace the not-so-sweet side of self-care.
Cheers to a restful week!
