Happy Wednesday friend!
This year I will turn 35 years old and I can honestly say that I have learned more about myself over the past 2 years than I have over the course of my entire life. (shoutout to therapy).
Yes, I know my favorite color and what I like to eat, but it has taken a lot of work to truly figure out who I am outside of the surface-level details. Knowing who I am, what triggers me, and what I desire, has helped me not only to make better life choices but has also helped me to be a better entrepreneur.
See when you know yourself, like really know yourself, it’s a lot easier for you to say “no” to opportunities or changes just because they are currently on trend. It becomes easier for you to set better boundaries (and stand firm in them) and eliminate anything from your business that is no longer serving who you really are.
Discovering more about yourself is a process that requires patience and guidance. To help you get started, here are 4 questions that you can dig into.
What triggers you?
What actions, situations, or even types of people trigger negative emotions, stress, or anxiety? To avoid negative emotions, it's important to be aware of potential triggers. Even though it may not be possible to completely avoid them, being mindful of what may cause these emotions can help in deciding which clients to work with or which opportunities to say yes to.
What brings you joy?
Just like you need to know what may cause you to become anxious or overextended, you also need to know what brings you joy. Throughout the past couple of years, leaning into what made me happy and not just what would make me money, has been a guiding light when it comes to making pivots within my business.
Let me remind you, leaning fully into what brings you joy will never be a bad choice. So many people (ahem, myself included) end up pouring themselves into building businesses that they hate. Many entrepreneurs prioritize building what's currently popular or profitable; while neglecting the importance of genuinely liking the business they create.
Staying in a place that constantly triggers you will only bring on stress which we know is not good for your overall health.
What motivates you?
What gets you up in the morning? What pushes you to keep going even when you don’t feel like it? For me, I truly feel like my words are going to change how women entrepreneurs around the world view entrepreneurship. For you, your why may be getting out of debt or being able to give back to your community. Knowing what motivates you is not just what will get you excited to work every day, it’s also what your biggest fans will rally around. Your WHY gives your business a deeper meaning and a story that your audience can connect with.
Lastly, what do you want?
Without settling or thinking twice about what is realistic, what is it that you want out of your life and your business? Being crystal clear on what your desires are, helps you to navigate every single decision you make. If a new opportunity doesn’t align with what you want, then it’s a no-brainer to say no. And when you know what you want, it’s a lot easier to not fall for what everyone else is doing.
Answering these four questions is a good start to getting to know yourself better and building a sustainable business. Now when I say sustainable, I don’t mean just financially. I mean a business that you actually want to wake up and work on daily, one that you want to grow, and one that sparks joy.
Take a few moments this week to get to know yourself better.
Cheers to a great week!
