Happy Wednesday friend!
This week I want to chat about CONFIDENCE. For a long time, I really struggled to feel confident in the work that I was creating and I know that it greatly affected my business’s growth.
When webinars were a great cash-converting strategy, I decided to host a class on how to use your content to gain more clients. If you didn’t know this about me, content is kinda my thing. Ideas come to me easily and I am absolutely passionate about figuring out different ways to share your words and ideas with your audience. Any opportunity I get to teach my strategies, I will do it. Needless to say, teaching this webinar should have come easy to me and it did…up until it was time for me to pitch my coaching program.
I breezed through the content like it was second nature but as soon as it was time for me to convert those watching into new clients…I choked.
It wasn’t because I was unprepared. I had rehearsed that pitch repeatedly and pretty much had it memorized. But when it came down to me sharing all of the reasons why these people needed to work with me, my energy completely shifted.
My voice became this high pitch Mickey Mouse tone, I began to stutter over every other word and even began to use phrases like “No rush to work with me.” or “IF you think this is right for you.” instead of being assertive.
And you know what? Not one person signed up. 🥴
As I listened back to the recording trying to figure out what the heck went wrong, I realized that I went from sounding extremely confident in what I was teaching to completely timid when it was time to pitch.
Why? I wasn’t confident enough in my ability to help these women in their business, and it showed. Yes, on the surface level, I knew what I was teaching would work. I had proven it time and time again. But deep down, all of my insecurities began to resurface when it came to expressing that out loud.
I didn’t really believe that what I had to offer was worth and so they didn’t either.
Over the years my confidence has ebbed and flowed. Some days I can tell you exactly what I’m doing with my whole chest and other days I cower away like a little mouse. But what I have learned about being confident as an entrepreneur is that,
If you don’t think that your shit is THE SHIT then no one else will either.
Those who are often the most confident and the most loud (unfortunately, even if they are loud and wrong) often are the most successful. Their confident energy is magnetic and that’s what draws people to them.
I am still on this journey to become my most confident self but here’s what I try to work on daily:
KEEP THE RECEIPTS
Whenever you prove that your expertise works, get an incredible testimonial or even a question from someone who trusts you, tuck that away in a little folder for you to look back on. I believe that lack of confidence often comes from us believing that what we have to offer isn’t good enough. This is why it’s important to look back on all of the amazing things we have achieved and the people we have helped.
REMEMBER THAT NOTHING IS A FAILURE
You’ve probably heard something similar to this before but there is a lot to learn from what you think is a failure. Failure teaches us what corrections need to be made and how to pivot. There is no success without taking a couple of L’s. In my early days of entrepreneurship, I allowed failure to consistently knock me down and strip me of my confidence. Looking back, there was a lot that I should have taken from those moments and used instead of using it as an excuse to give up.
ALWAYS BE A STUDENT
Want to up your confidence? Learn everything that there is to know about your industry and audience. Continuing to educate yourself gives you the tools to be able to show up more confidently. A lack of confidence can be a direct correlation to a lack of knowledge. Keep being a student and just watch how confident you become.
KEEP HYPING YOURSELF UP
Celebrate every single milestone, even the small ones. Surround yourself with people who will not only celebrate you but also remind you to celebrate yourself. Nine times out of ten, you’re doing something right, you just don’t see it. Make sure you’re taking time out daily to congratulate yourself for making it through another day.
As always, I have to mention the power of therapy. Confidence has become a recurring theme in my sessions and it has been so helpful to not only reframe how I think about myself or the work that I’m doing but to also get to the root of what’s causing my lack of confidence.
What do you do to build your confidence? Let me know in the comments!
Cheers to a restful week!
