Hey friend! Do you remember the first time you felt imposter syndrome?
The earliest experience that I can remember was when I was a rising senior in high school. It was my 3rd year on the dance team and I had been asked by our advisor to try out for captain. I have always been shy, so being on the dance team was already a major deal in itself. But becoming captain would have put a whole different spotlight on me. I would have been front and center at every single event.
I remember thinking to myself,
“There is no way that I will be good at this.”
“I’m not a good enough dancer to lead an entire team.”
But the thing is, I was good. It was my 3rd year for heaven’s sake and I knew what I was doing. But I allowed imposter syndrome to make me feel like I wasn’t worthy.
And you know what I did? I backed out and spent my entire senior year fading in the background.
That hasn’t been the only time that I’ve allowed imposter syndrome to win. Entrepreneurship has brought up a ton of fraudy feelings that I’ve allowed to hold me back for years.
That’s why I’m really excited about this week’s issue. I had the honor of interviewing author, L’Oreal Thompson-Payton about her experience with imposter syndrome and how it inspired her to write her new book, “Stop Waiting For Perfect.”
Not only do we dig into L’Oreal’s new book, but she also shares how she pushes past imposter syndrome, how we can learn to trust ourselves, and how we should be channeling our inner “Chad.”
L’Oreal on learning how to trust yourself:
You already have the answer. Everything you need is already inside of you. You have to learn to trust that. That is good enough. YOU are good enough. You don’t need everyone else to weigh in on what you’re about to do. You can do it. And do it flawed and do it scared.
You can listen to the full interview on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or the media player at the top of this newsletter.
L’Oreal’s new book, Stop Waiting For Perfect, releases on August 15th, but you can pre-order your copy now!
You can keep up with L’Oreal through her website, by signing up for her Substack newsletter, and by following her on Instagram.
Cheers to an incredible week!
