ISSUE #6: What to do in those overwhelming, anxious moments
A quick exercise to regulate your nervous system when you're feeling anxious
Yesterday was one of those days where I felt like I was being pulled in a million different directions. From our house walk-through, to work meetings, doctors appointments and a very long to-do list looming over my head, I felt myself becoming more anxious and overwhelmed by the minute 🥴
Now, normally when I begin to feel this way, my go-to is to take a good nap and start over but in the midst of everything that I had going on, that wasn't going to happen. So I went back to an exercise that my therapist recommended I do when I need to take a moment to myself but don't have a lot of time.
Before going into my next appointment, I sat in my car, took a deep breath and identified my 5 senses.
I brought awareness to what I was smelling in the moment, what I could taste, the noises around me, what I could see and what I was currently touching.
In under two minutes I was able to quiet my mind and regulate my nervous system so that I was no longer feeling the physical effects of anxiety and overwhelm. Did this get rid of all of the things that I needed to do or send me into a total state of nirvana? No. But it did calm me down enough to allow me to think clearly and not feel so frazzled.
Overwhelm at some point is inevitable. Especially if you're an entrepreneur who is managing a 9 to 5, home and social life. And if you manage anxiety like I do, then you know how it can pop up at the most inconvenient time. But learning what works best to quiet your mind can be a game changer when you're just trying to make it through the day.
How do you quickly calm yourself down when you're feeling overwhelmed or anxious? Hit reply and let me know!
